Teaching Effectiveness

 

The Library offers resources and services to promote teaching effectiveness. The Librarians provide information sessions and workshops for faculty throughout the semester. The Head of Instructional Technology consults with the faculty on methods for student learning as well as course design and learning outcomes.

Student Digital & Information Literacy (DIL)

 

The Library faculty strive to collaborate with course instructors to teach students Digital & Information Literacy (DIL) and research skills. Librarians are prepared to work with instructors to incorporate DIL components into course syllabi and assignments. This often includes instruction sessions, one-on-one and group consultations, or other partnerships. Based on the America Library Association Information Competency Standards and the framework adopted by Bryn Mawr College, we teach students to:

  • find, access, evaluate and use information effectively and critically to accomplish research goals
  • leverage media and technology to create new content and knowledge
  • use appropriate media and technology to communicate findings
  • understand ethical, legal, social and economic issues related to the use of information and technology

  • The Yellow Jacket Experience: A multimedia presentation of the student experience at Randolph-Macon from 1868 to 2019 from a contemporary perspective; research and website collaboratively completed by students in HONR 300 
  • Students creating 3D books to present themes found in the fairy tales they studied in FREN 273 “Fairy Tale Beginnings” class; details in this library blog Fairy Tale Beginnings in 3D.
  • Adaptation of El Abencerraje: Adaptation and performance based on student reflections on text from 16th & 17th century Spain, collaboratively produced and made available by students in SPAN 400 

 

Scholarship

 

Your library maintains information and resources on research tools, writing academic books and journals, and publishing academic works. The Scholar’s Retreat, an annual event co-sponsored by the Library and the Higgins Academic Center, provides dedicated space and support for faculty to work on a writing or research project. The Faculty Info-to-Go sessions offer opportunities for faculty to share ideas and tips of scholarly publishing. Librarians can also help faculty identify citations and find publication venues.
