Conducting Classes Remotely (Synchronous Lectures) in Zoom or Microsoft Teams

Holding live (synchronous) classes and meetings online with students is made possible through Zoom, or Microsoft Teams

 

Zoom 

Zoom is a video conferencing application available to R-MC faculty, staff and students via Zoom Professional licenses and Zoom Basic licenses available from ITS. With Zoom you can teach and hold online meetings anytime and anywhere. You can also record Zoom sessions for students to view on demand. 

Accessing Zoom

Faculty and students must activate their R-MC Zoom accounts to begin using Zoom properly. Then sign in with your R-MC Single-sign-on (SSO) username and password. You may download the desktop client or simply use the web-version without downloading. Be sure to use Chrome for the web-version. The downloaded desktop client offers more functions, including Breakout Room and Polling. You may also download the mobile App.

Zoom is available within Canvas (LMS), or can be accessed at rmc.zoom.us. If using the Canvas-integrated version, the course instructor can schedule and start a video conference from inside the Canvas course. To avoid being hacked or "Zoombombed", faculty should increase Zoom meeting security. Students may click the “Join” button in Canvas, or follow the meeting invitation provided by the instructor to join the conference. Students cannot schedule or start a Zoom meeting from inside Canvas. For security, the instructor should check the box for "Require Meeting Password" when scheduling a Zoom meeting in Canvas.

Some students experience problems accessing scheduled Zoom meetings from Canvas; they do not have a "Join" button available in their Canvas. Faculty should direct students to this trouble-shooting information.

There are advantages for the instructor to schedule and start a Zoom session from within Canvas:

  • Course activities, including Zoom meetings, are accessible by students from the centralized Canvas site.
  • The student's R-MC (official) identity will appear as Participant in the Zoom meeting. This is especially helpful for the instructor to review the Meeting Report (under the "Previous Meetings" tab). The Report includes student attendance information (when the student joins and leaves the meeting).

If accessing Zoom from https://rmc.zoom.us, anyone, including students, can set up meetings. To invite others to join a Zoom session, in “Scheduling a Meeting”, copy the invitation information and paste it into email or Canvas communication; or select a calendar (e.g. Outlook) to schedule the meeting. For security, the faculty should select "Only authenticated user can join" when scheduling a meeting for class.

Microsoft Teams 

Microsoft Teams functions similarly as Zoom. R-MC users enjoy unlimited time and number of participants for any sessions. You can record Teams sessions and save the recordings in your OneDrive for students to view on demand.

Access at https://gormc.sharepoint.com (or go to the R-MC webpage, on the bottom of the page, select the link “Intranet/BuzzNet”). Log in using your R-MC username and password.
