Tips for Successful Distance Learning

When classroom instruction is interrupted due to emergencies, online tools such as Canvas, Zoom, and Google Drive can be used to continue classes at a distance. This resource guide provides tips and guidance to support online learning at R-MC during the coronavirus outbreak.

Here are some general guidelines for being successful at distance learning:

  • Establish a good workspace and keep that space consistent
  • Stay on top of your syllabus
  • Engage in conversations online, either in message boards or video conferencing
  • Stay organized
  • Be disciplined to do work at the same time every day; hold yourself accountable
  • Eliminate distractions
  • Manage time wisely
  • Stay in communication with your classmates/peers and Instructor
  • Seek help when needed

You may have more writing heavy assignments during this time, it can't hurt to check with the Communication Center for a little writing help.

Zoom

Zoom - synchronous (real-time) video conferencing

Zoom allows you to participate in synchronous (real-time) video conferencing. You can chat, go into breakout rooms, chat with others in class, and share your screen (for example, you could share a presentation you had created in PowerPoint or Google Slides).

**Test your Zoom connection any time**

You can test your video, audio, sharing your screen, and chatting.

Things to know about Zoom:

  • You can join Zoom with your browser (Chrome or Firefox work best) or you can download the Zoom application on your computer.
  • You can join a Zoom meeting within Canvas using the Zoom link available in your course
  • You can go to https://rmc.zoom.us/ to start a Zoom meeting with other students

Troubleshooting:

Some students experience problems accessing scheduled Zoom meetings from Canvas; they do not have a "Join" button available in their Canvas. Please refer to this troubleshooting information

Sometime Zoom video freezes or cuts out completely.  To combat this:

  • Turn off your video feed and only rely on audio
  • Quit the meeting and rejoin
