Reduced-Cost Internet Options

Adapted from guidance from the Virginia Chief Information Officers group:

If you do not currently have Internet connectivity at home, there are several options available for inexpensive internet.

To discover what other companies may be offering through the cellular carrier or cable company in your area, do a Google search for “{companyname} COVID-19” or call your local provider.

Zoom

Zoom - synchronous (real-time) video conferencing

Zoom allows you to participate in synchronous (real-time) video conferencing. You can chat, go into breakout rooms, chat with others in class, and share your screen (for example, you could share a presentation you had created in PowerPoint or Google Slides).

**Test your Zoom connection any time**

You can test your video, audio, sharing your screen, and chatting.

Things to know about Zoom:

  • You can join Zoom with your browser (Chrome or Firefox work best) or you can download the Zoom application on your computer.
  • You can join a Zoom meeting within Canvas using the Zoom link available in your course
  • You can go to https://rmc.zoom.us/ to start a Zoom meeting with other students

Troubleshooting:

Some students experience problems accessing scheduled Zoom meetings from Canvas; they do not have a "Join" button available in their Canvas. Please refer to this troubleshooting information

Sometime Zoom video freezes or cuts out completely.  To combat this:

  • Turn off your video feed and only rely on audio
  • Quit the meeting and rejoin

Off-Campus Access with Single Sign-On (SSO)

Occasionally issues may keep you from accessing electronic resources. Some things you can try to troubleshoot the problem:

  • Access to Randolph-Macon's electronic resources uses the campus-wide Single Sign On system for tools such as Canvas, MyMaconWeb, and the Microsoft Office Suite. If the Single Sign On page is not working please contact ITS. This may be because of a change in their system or an issue with DUO. If you contact ITS, support at helpline@rmc.edu should be able to troubleshoot the issue.
  • If you are having difficulty with DUO, please see the ITS webpage on DUO authentication, which includes some FAQs.
  • If you are having difficulty your password, please see Microsoft's Password Common Problems page, or contact ITS at helpline@rmc.edu
  • If it is not a Single Sign On issue, try clearing the cache and deleting cookies in your browser.  Don't know how to do this?  Google "clear cache" or "delete cookies" and the name of your browser. You can also try using “incognito mode” or “private browsing mode” (depending on your browser), which should allow you to try that browser without clearing the cache. If it works, then you know that clearing the cache and deleting cookies should be effective.
  • Try another internet browser. Several of our resources only work reliably with Chrome or Firefox
  • If you are using wifi or computers at a different institution or library, there can be firewall issues when trying to connect to R-MC resources. Try using the internet from another location such as an internet cafe or coffee shop to see if that fixes the problem.

Troubleshooting Library Resources

Library resources are accessed using a tool called ezproxy, which will prompt you to logon with your R-MC username/password when trying to access databases, ebooks, or other resources through the Library homepage.

If you experience database connection problems, please contact library@rmc.edu. Please provide as much information as you can, including the name and version of your browser, the database you are trying to connect to, and any error messages you may be seeing. If possible, take a screenshot (here's help on how to take a screenshot).
