What is a Research Guide?

Research Guides are collections of resources and databases created by librarians and staff at the McGraw-Page Library to help you find the best, relevant information for your research. “Subject Guides” bring together the best resources for specific disciplines. “General Guides” bring together information and resources on various general topics relevant to both research and academic life at Randolph-Macon.

Subject librarians specialize in helping with research in specific areas of study, so if you have questions or need help with research don't hesitate to reach out to your subject librarian!

Basics of Library Research - Videos and Interactive Tutorials

Introduction to the Library's Website (1 Minute)
This video will introduce you to the McGraw-Page Library website and how to find help with your research.
Brainstorming/Mindmapping a topic (3 minutes)
Coming up with an idea for a research topic can be hard. This video will help you brainstorm a topic with just the minimum information to start!
Searching in a Database (3 Minutes)
Once you have your research topic, you may be asked to use articles - this video will show you how to use our library databases to find journal articles.
Searching in Our Catalog (6 Minutes)
You may be asked to use books or media for your project. This video will show you how to search in the library's catalog for books.
Working with Database Results (6 Minutes)
Once you have your search underway in the library database, you'll be presented with a lot of information. This video will help you navigate through all the results.
Better Searching with Google (4 Minutes)
Google is always there, but how you use it may not be helpful. This video will share tips and tricks on how to search in Google to get better search results.
Academic Integrity (CREDO)
This interactive tutorial will introduce you to plagiarism and ethical behavior, and the idea that acting with academic integrity stems from an understanding that information has value, and appreciating scholarship as an academic conversation.
Plagiarism (CREDO) (3 Minutes)
This video will discuss the different types of plagiarism and how to avoid it in your own writing.
Copyright (CREDO)
This tutorial will introduce intellectual property, copyright, and creative commons to help you learn how to how to legally incorporate the work of others into your own research.

How Do I - Videos

Place a Hold
If you find a book in the library catalog and you want to make sure no one checks it out before you, place a hold on the item. This video will teach you how.
Use Interlibrary Loan (1 Minute)
If you need an item McGraw-Page Library doesn't have access to, you can get it from another library! It's called "Interlibrary Loan" and this video shows you how to place a request.
Reserve a Study Room (1 Minute)
Did you know you can reserve specific study rooms in the Library? This video will show you how to do that.
Understand a Journal Article Record (1 Minute)
If you use our main search box you can find journal articles - this video will explain what you're looking at.
Understand a Book Record (1 Minute)
If you use our main search box you can find books or eBooks - this video will explain what you're looking at.
Use My Library Account (1 Minute)
If you have items checked out you may want to renew them - you can do that through My Library account. This will show you the ins and outs of your account.
