Operating Procedures for Information Desk Student Employees

Information Desk Student Worker Guide

Locations

  • If someone is looking for a room in the library, use the interactive map.
  • If someone is looking for a room or building outside the library, give them a paper map. They are located on the Information Desk next to the Subject Librarian cards.

Material Locations:

  • Books/Materials: 
    • Most books are located upstairs and are shelved using the Library of Congress call number system.
    • Picture/children's (PIC) and Juvenile (JUV) books are located in the back left corner of the library (next to the 24/7 room). They are shelved using the Dewey Decimal System.
    • Faculty books are shelved using the LOC Call numbers and are located to the left of the 24/7 room.
    • POP books are located on the shelves across from the 24/7 room.
    • Reference (REF) books and Journals are located on the first floor shelves across from the Information Desk.
    • Interlibrary Loans (ILL) that are ready to be picked up are placed on the blue cart behind the Information Desk.
    • Holds (still needing to be checked out to a patron) are located on the blue cart behind the Information Desk.
    • DVDs: located on shelves across from the Information Desk (1st floor). They are shelved using the Dewey Decimal System and are sorted by language.
  • Equipment:
    • Laptops:
      • NOTE: laptops require a Laptop/Media Equipment Check Out Form (see Checking Out Materials).
      • 5 hour laptops: located in the white cabinet behind the Information Desk and below the PA system (does NOT include charger or bag).
      • 3 day laptops: located in the closet behind the Information Desk (includes charger and laptop bag).
    • Cameras, video cameras, AV, other Makerspace equipment: located in the black cabinet behind the Information Desk.
    • DVD players: located in the closet behind the Information Desk.
    • Tablets: located in the closet behind the Information Desk.
    • Headphones: located in the closet behind the Information Desk.
    • Tripods: located in the closet behind the Information Desk.
    • Power strips: located in the closet behind the Information Desk.

    • Microfilm and Microfiche: filed in cabinets on the far side of the stairs. The Reader is located behind the stairs, and instructions are found with the reader.

  • Other Materials:

    • Cables: yellow bins behind Information Desk.

    • Calculators: yellow bins behind Information Desk.

    • White Board Markers: yellow bins behind Information Desk.

    • Supply Kits (scissors, glue, white out, highlighter): yellow bins behind Information Desk.

  • Library Forms:

    • Clipboards on Information Desk.

      • Closing Documentation

      • Manual Check-out forms in case OCLC is down.

    • Blue hold bookmarks.

    • The following are in the Black Accordion Folder, located under the information desk:

      • New User Registration Forms.

      • Complaint Forms (if someone thinks we should remove a book from the library).

      • Computer Out of Order Signs.

      • Technology agreement forms

  • Keys:
    • 24/7 Room, Makerspace, and Information Desk drawer keys are located under the Information Desk.
