Operating Procedures for Information Desk Student Employees

Tasks

Circulation Desk Assistant Responsibilities

Duties may include any of the following:

Circulation / Information Desk

  • Check out/check in library materials.
  • Process holds, renewals, and other patron requests.
  • Sort books for shelving.
  • Answer basic informational, directional, and library policy questions.
  • Help patrons locate materials.
  • Provide computer, print, and copy assistance as needed.
  • Assist with document delivery scanning and processing requests.
  • Assist with course reserve processing.
  • Answer phone calls.
  • General organizational and office work.

Stacks Maintenance

  • Gather, sort, and shelve materials.
  • Shelf-read for proper call number order.
  • Straighten shelves, update aisle markers, replace bookends.
  • Identify books needing repair.
  • Shift areas as needed.
  • Search for missing/misplaced items.
  • Report maintenance and security concerns to supervisor.

Other

  • Assist with special projects.
  • Assist with opening and closing procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Customer Service

Keep in mind the following when working at the Information Desk:  ๐Ÿ˜ƒ	Greet people as they come in the library or approach the Information Desk.  ๐Ÿ™‚	Look up from the desk and be approachable!  ๐Ÿง	Pay attention when patrons ask questions and ask clarifying questions in  order to help locate the best solution. Offer alternatives (if possible) when  necessary.  ๐Ÿค—	Follow up with your supervisor or refer patrons to subject librarians as  needed. Itโ€™s ok to have patrons contact librarians by email.  ๐Ÿคฉ	Take pride in your job! Youโ€™re a valuable member of the library team.
